BSI (Beauteque Skincare Investigation): Secrets for Acne-Prone Skin

Hey Beauties!

Cassi here with another Beauteque Skincare Investigation. Summer is right around the corner, which means it’s time to start thinking about switching up your skincare & makeup routine!

As a resident of the Jersey Shore, summer tends to mean minimal everything – minimal footwear, clothing, and also makeup. As crop tops and flip flops come out, we find ourselves trading our heavy foundations for lighter SPF-infused BB creams & tinted moisturizers. For those of us who suffer from acne, this unfortunately means less coverage! However, a lot of us here at Beauteque are taking the mantra “skincare is the new foundation” to heart and banishing breakouts so going makeup-free this summer won’t be an issue. In this issue of BSI, I’ll discuss some tips, products, & ingredients perfect for targeting acne so you can tame those pesky bumps.

Micellar Water

Micellar water is a holy grail for many skincare enthusiasts. But what the heck is it? Micellar water is formulated with micelles (tiny oil molecules) suspended in soft water. Impurities trapped in your pores are attracted to these micelles, so it gently lifts away dirt and oil. It’s great for removing makeup and cleansing your face without stripping essential oils or drying out your skin. Bioderma’s famous cleansing waters put micellar water on the map! Choose from their Sebium H20 Micelle Solution for combination/oily skin (the green cap shown above) or their Crealine H20 Micelle Solution for super sensitive skin (pink cap shown above).

Snail mucin is a popular ingredient as a treatment for acne. Snails use the mucus coating their bodies to repair the daily wear-and-tear that comes along with being a snail. Luckily you can reap those benefits on your own skin! Mizon’s Snail Recovery Gel Cream is a cult-favorite that is lightweight and perfect for those sweaty summer months. The gel cream consistency easily absorbs into your skin without being too heavy or greasy, while the snail mucin helps fade acne spots & scarring.

Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are definitely the lazy-girl approach to skincare. Two ingredients that are awesome for soothing acne-prone skin are tea tree and rice extract.

Tea tree oil has been known to be an effective antimicrobial agent and is just about as effective (and gentler!) as benzoyl peroxide at treating acne. Fortunately it’s also a popular sheet mask ingredient! We carry these popular tea tree masks from Tony Moly, Innisfree, and Holika Holika.

Rice water is an old beauty secret that has been used for ages to cleanse and nourish skin and hair. It’s been shown to help brighten complexions and fade acne scars, and also comes conveniently-packaged in sheet mask form! Try out a rice mask from Skinfood (currently on sale for only $1.41!), Tony Moly, or Missha.

For stubborn breakouts, we’ve got two Cosrx products specially formulated to deal with blemishes! Centella Asiatica leaf water has antibacterial properties and helps heal open wounds, so it’s perfect for calming active breakouts. For best results, use these two Cosrx Centella Blemish products together to work double time to heal acne.

This cute little number from Mizon is their Tea Tree Tock Blemish Spot. Made with 15% tea tree oil extract, this little tube of gel is perfect for spot treating blemishes. It absorbs quickly and helps soothe and bring down the swelling & appearance of pimples. Plus it comes in this awesome protective tube, so you don’t have to worry about it exploding all over your purse!
